Safdarjung Airport was also an integral part of the South Atlantic air ferry route. It also played a significant role during Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. Safdarjung airport remained the chief airport of Delhi till the year 1962. Thereafter, the operation shifted to Palam Airport totally towards late 1960s owing to its incapability to support the new bigger aircraft such as the jet aircraft.

The Delhi Flying Club was established at Safdarjung Airport in the year 1928 with two de Havilland Moth aircraft. These were named as ‘Delhi’ and ‘Roshanara’.
