Hisar was originally founded by a Muslim ruler by the name of Firozshah Tughlaq in 1354 A.D. ‘Hisar’ is actually an Arabic term which means ‘Fort’.

The city, which is currently popular as ‘Hisar’, was originally referred to as ‘Hisar Firoza, Hisar-e-Firoza. This literally means ‘Fort of Firoz’. However, with the passage of time, the term ‘Firoza’ was dropped from its original name.

Ancient Mound Aghora

This is about 22 Km. from Hisar on Hisar-Fazilka road. You can take a taxi to reach this place. The excavations at Agroha have brought to light the antiquities belonging to 3rd-4th century B.C and 13th -14th century A.D Some of popular structures include shrines, defense wall etc. You can have a look at stone sculptures, iron and copper implements, terracotta sealing, beads of shell, semi-precious stone, glass and Terri cotta, coins and sculptures excavated from here.

Jahaj Kothi

This is located in Hisar Town and built by George Thomas a native of Ireland. He was also the uncrowned ruler of the territory between Sirsa and Rohtak. Thomas originally built it for his residence. It appears like a ship in the ocean and hence the name Jahaj Kothi.

Ancient Gumbad

It is located at the Government Collage Complex in Hisar town. The monument is actually the tomb of Pranpir Badshah from the early 14th Century A.D. He was the spiritual teacher of Sher Bahlol or Dana Sher.
