The airfield of Hakimpet has a history that dates back to the beginning of the Second World War. This was also the time when Hakimpet entered the Or BAT of Indian Air Force (year 1951). During this year, Conversion and Training Unit was established in order to ensure Fighter Conversion Training to newly commissioned IAF pilots. The following years witnessed Jet Training Wing establishment. It was renamed to Fighter Training Wing.  On Dec 1984, the airfield was upgraded to a full-fledged 'Air Force Station' grade. At present, it is home to the Helicopter Training School, FTW, and ancillary units.
